What Booster Clubs Actually Need
Before comparing products, let’s define what a booster club concession stand POS actually needs to do:
- Accept card payments in person — tap, chip, swipe with a physical reader
- Be simple enough for volunteers — untrained parents running it for the first time
- Cost nothing (or close to it) for the organization — every dollar matters
- Track events — open an event, close it, see what sold
- Deposit directly to the org’s bank — no middleman holding funds
With those criteria, let’s look at the options.
The Comparison
| Feature | SpiritPay | Square | Zeffy | BoosterHub |

SpiritPay
SpiritPay is a free iPhone and iPad app built specifically for booster clubs, PTOs, and community organizations running concession stands.
What makes it different:
- Your organization pays $0. The 5% + $0.05 service fee is added to the customer’s total. A $5 hot dog rings up as $5.30 — your org keeps $5.00.
- Purpose-built for event concessions, not retail
- Event open/close, real-time sales tracking, close-out reports
- Works with the Stripe M2 reader ($59) for tap, chip, and swipe
- Free demo mode — try the full app without creating an account
Best for: Organizations that want in-person card payments without paying any fees. If your priority is “keep every dollar,” this is the answer.
Limitations: iOS only (iPhone/iPad). No Android app currently. No online payment or ticketing features.
Square
Square is the 800-pound gorilla of POS systems. It works, it’s reliable, and it’s everywhere. But it wasn’t built for you.
What’s good:
- Rock-solid hardware and software
- Extensive feature set (inventory, employee management, loyalty)
- No monthly fee for the basic tier
What’s not great for booster clubs:
- Your organization pays 2.6% + $0.10 per transaction. On $25,000 in annual card sales, that’s roughly $700/year coming directly out of your fundraising revenue.
- No event-specific features (can’t open/close an event, no event reports)
- The interface is designed for retail — lots of features your volunteers will never use
- Support is entirely self-serve
Best for: Organizations that also run a physical store or need advanced retail features.
Zeffy
Zeffy is excellent at what it does: online donations, event ticketing, and fundraising pages for nonprofits. It’s truly free for the organization.
What’s good:
- Genuinely $0 cost to the nonprofit
- Great for online donation campaigns and event ticketing
- Built specifically for the nonprofit space
What’s not great for concession stands:
- No in-person card reader. Zeffy is online-only. You cannot use it to accept tap/chip/swipe payments at a concession stand.
- Revenue model relies on optional donor “tips” to Zeffy, which can feel awkward
- Not designed for point-of-sale operations
Best for: Online fundraising, event registration, and donation campaigns. Not for in-person sales.
BoosterHub
BoosterHub is built for booster clubs, which is great. But the pricing model puts it out of reach for many smaller organizations.
What’s good:
- Purpose-built for booster club management
- Includes membership tracking, communication tools, and event planning
What’s not great:
- $500+/year licensing fee
- Your org still pays the payment processing fees on top of the license
- Focus is on club management, not concession stand POS
- No dedicated in-person card reader integration
Best for: Large, well-funded booster clubs that need a full management platform and can justify the annual cost.
The Real Cost Comparison
Let’s see what each option costs a booster club that processes $25,000 in card sales per year across 15–20 events:
| Cost | SpiritPay | Square | BoosterHub |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual license | $0 | $0 | $500+ |
| Processing fees (on $25K) | $0 to org | ~$700 | ~$700+ |
| Card reader | $59–79 | $49 | N/A |
| Total Year 1 | $59–79 | ~$749 | ~$1,200+ |
| Total Year 2+ | $0 | ~$700 | ~$1,200+ |
Over 3 years, a booster club using Square pays ~$2,100 in processing fees. The same club using SpiritPay pays $59 for a reader — total. The difference is $2,000+ that stays in your fundraising budget.
So Which One Should You Use?
- You need in-person card payments at concession stands: SpiritPay (free, customer pays fees) or Square (your org pays fees)
- You need online donations and event ticketing: Zeffy is excellent for this
- You need a full booster club management platform: BoosterHub, if you can justify the cost
- You need both in-person and online: Use SpiritPay for concessions + Zeffy for online donations. They complement each other.
